What Is a Micro Drama? Vertical Short Dramas, Explained
A whole season in the time it takes to watch one film — told one minute, and one cliffhanger, at a time.
By Juliet Croft ·
In short: A vertical short drama is a serialized story filmed for a phone held upright: episodes of about a minute, dozens to a season, each ending on a turn that pulls you into the next. Juliet Croft explains the form, why it borrows so much from the nineteenth-century serial novel, and how to watch The Blackcandle Pawnshop.
People ask me what to call what I make. The honest answer is a vertical short drama: a serialized story shot for a phone held upright, told in episodes of about a minute, with forty-odd episodes to a season.
You will also hear it called a micro drama, or microdrama — the name the industry uses. Short drama apps such as ReelShort and DramaBox turned the format into a global habit; my own series stream on julietcroftfilms.com and on DramaBreak. Micro drama, vertical drama, short drama: it is the same thing, a full story told in a minute at a time.
That sounds new. It isn’t, really.
The oldest trick in fiction
In 1836, readers waited a month for each installment of The Pickwick Papers. Dickens learned quickly that the end of an installment mattered more than almost anything inside it. Wilkie Collins is often credited with the advice to make them laugh, make them cry, make them wait. Newspapers ran novels a chapter a day, and readers bought the paper for the novel.
A short drama works the same way, just faster. Each episode has one job: to change something, and then stop at the exact moment you need to know what happens next. Forty-six of those, end to end, add up to a story about the length of a feature film.
Why vertical
Because that is how you hold your phone. Filming upright means a face fills the screen. There is no room for a wide establishing shot of a city, so the camera stays close — on a hand signing a contract, on someone’s eyes when they realize what they have already lost. It is closer to theater than to television: everything happens in the actors’ faces.
That suits the kind of stories I tell. They are about bargains, debts and second chances, and those are decided in close-up.
What makes a good one
A good short drama is not a long drama cut into pieces. A few things I hold myself to:
- Every episode turns. If nothing changes in a minute, it is not an episode yet.
- The cliffhanger is a question, not a trick. You should end each episode wanting an answer, not feeling cheated.
- The season has a real ending. The pleasure of serial fiction is the payoff, and a story that never lands breaks the promise.
How to watch
The Blackcandle Pawnshop is all forty-six episodes, finished. A dying man in New Orleans takes the devil’s job pricing the corrupt; every contract he closes buys him thirty more days and costs him one memory of the woman who traded her soul to save him.
Watch it on your phone, held upright, sound on. The first fifteen episodes are free to everyone. The rest open the moment you add your email — no password, no app.
